Join us on Bread and Roses Friday December 26, for a conversation with local activists about their grassroots fundraising efforts in our community. We will be joined by Althea Lazero from In Other Words feminist bookstore about efforts to save the store. In Other Words has come under strain in recent months because of the financial crisis, and they've put out a call to the community to help save the store. Find out more information on helping save the last non-profit feminist bookstore in the nation at www.inotherwords.org
We'll also welcome Pastor Mary Overstreet Smith, to talk with her about her grassroots fundraising efforts in our community. Among her many accolades, Pastor Mary organized a group of people to help after Hurricane Katrina, and she is also a founder of North by Northeast Community Health Clinic -- bringing free health care to the Northeast Portland community.
We'll also be taking calls at the end of the show -- asking you to share your ideas about unique and effective methods of grassroots fundraising.

Pumpkin Contest success!
Indie, the winner of Ann Bancroft
Bread and Roses raised more than $600 for the North by Northeast Community Health Clinic when we held our Revolutionary Pumpkin Contest and Raffle this past Sunday! It was a load of fun -- and totally inspiring. It is not hard to do some grassroots organizing like Carole and Kris did, and have a lot of fun at the same time! Four Cinderella pumpkins were entered into the "judging" portion of the night. They won prizes as follows:
#1 - Phoolan Devi won first prize, for her ability to come back from a traumatic dog attack.
#2 - Punkin Tatunkin got second for showing that persistence, and plain old showing up can make one a winner. Punkin Tatunkin was about an inch in diameter. She only started growing with the help of Brooke's four-year-old nephew's fairy wand, two weeks before the raffle.
#3 - Ann Bancroft got third for her ability to thrive while on a wild adventure far from home. Ann proves that yes, size and beauty matter. She has both.
#4- Comandante Ramona the round-faced, smallish Cinderella pumpkin took fourth. It's not last exactly, because she did get props for flourishing, in a diminuitive sort of way, in spite of her lack of opportunity.

She looks like Sarah Palin
The woman in the patriarchy cartoon seen in an earlier post looks amusingly like Sarah Palin. How ironic and sad. Should we use this forum to start a discussion about why, even more than Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Dole, or any other woman in power in the Unites States, this woman is categorically BAD for our country and for feminism itself? Discuss.

A Look at Ourselves show 8/15/08
This show will soon be up on kboo.fm:
New York based writer and researcher Kristen Lewis is co-director of the American Human Development Project, a non-partisan, non-profit initiative to apply a well established international approach to measuring human well-being in the US. The human development index is a fact-based tool that examines health, education and income and compares the data across geographic, ethnic and gender lines within the US and across the globe. The results will surprise you and should steer a national debate. The report includes practical recommendations.
Many of the national findings are mirrored locally in Multnomah County. Jean DeMaster, Director of Human Solutions, will offer some local data and give examples for creative responses in addressing issues related to poverty and inequality.
This is the book that was featured on the show.

Revolutionary Pumpkin Contest
Bread and Roses is bringing you the world's only feminist pumpkin growing contest/fundraiser /educational outreach mission!
Our subcommittee worked out the following details:
1. Pumpkin Coach: Kris we'll provide all pumpkining tips. The variety is CINDERELLA. For more info, also see:
http://www.rainyside.com/archives/GrowingPumpkins.html
http://www.pumpkingrowingtips.com/info.htm
2. Pumpkin Judge: Jen -- voted in by popular demand
HOW IT WILL WORK:
Raffle / fundraiser
We will raise a TON of money raffling off the pumpkins. Ok, maybe at least $500, by selling raffle tickets in the fall, $2 each. The money will be divided between a local and international cause, such as the North by Northeast Health Clinic, etc.
Raffle winners will get a wonderful pumpkin who, due to her spirit, will be named after a great heroine, of the growers' choice. (Growers must be in tune with the pumpkin's psyche.) The pumpkin will come with a little bio of the heroine. (Marlene can provide historical advice.) This is our educational outreach.
Contest
The pumpkins will also be judged in a contest for poise, personality and revolutionary spirit, and/or whatever the judge decides to judge them on. Pumpkin judgement will take place in the fall at Kris/Suki's cantina. We'll also do the raffle drawing at that time. Contest winners will receive something, though it's unclear what.
Thank you all,
RPCC
