9/4/09 Show: Equalizing Girls' Education

School will soon be in session -- so it's time to focus on equalizing girls' education! We've come a long way since Title IX was passed three decades ago, but we still have a long way to go. Girls do get better grades than boys, but they're still lagging behind on standardized tests, and enrolling in the highest-tech subjects like physics, calculus, and chemistry. Teachers, whether they know it or not, still call on boys more than girls in class, and gloss over boys' aggressive behavior as part of their biological makeup. In this way, boys are also sold short by a perhaps-unconscious gender stereotype that expects them to be dominant in the classroom, and later the boardroom.

So what can we do about it? How do we help our students and educators work through gender stereotypes? And how can we continue to encourage girls to follow their dreams, and pursue careers in science, mathematics, and technology?

Join host Nico this Friday, September 4 at 6 pm for a discussion on girls' education worldwide, and efforts to level the playing field.

We'll be joined by Karen Jones from PCC/PAVTEC'S Middle School Girls Conference -- an annual conference that gives Portland-area girls exposure to careers in science, math, and technology.

We'll also be joined by Thomas Lwebuga and Julie Resnick, organizers at ZoomUganda -- a Portland-based charity currently raising funds to build science classrooms for a girls' high school in Uganda.

2.13.09 Show - Women in Oregon History

Harvey Scott was editor of the The Oregonian newspaper from 1866–1872. His sister Abigail Scott Duniway was a famous suffragist. She started the paper The New Northwest while supporting herself as a teacher. From 1884 to 1910, Oregon's male voters defeated suffrage five times at the polls. Abigail Duniway led the Oregon Equal Suffrage Association finally to victory at the polls in 1912. She became the first woman in her state to register to vote.Harvey Scott was an outspoken opponent of women’s right to vote. As a conservative, Scott used the Oregonian to oppose many of the social reforms of his time including free high schools and state supported schools of higher education. Harvey Scott got the statue on Mount Tabor -- Abigail did not.For more information listen the “Bread & Roses” Special on Oregon’s 150th birthday on Friday, Feb. 13 from 6 – 7 PM on KBOO 90.7 FM or www.kboo.fm

Report from the DP wire

Portland - Rumors and whisperings are coming into the Disassociated Press about a group of rogue feminists, trying today to take down the statue of our beloved Harvey Scott, esteemed editor and molder of opinion in Oregon in the 19th and 20th century. The word is, these fanatical feminists wish to replace the statue with one of a Ms. Abigail Scott Duniway, sister of Mr. Scott, who was a pioneer for women's suffrage, in spite of her brother's efforts to the contrary. Several sleuthy photographers were able to document this feminist group, called Bread and Roses, pulling the statue down this afternoon with a less-than-hefty piece of rope. Stay tuned for more from the Disassociated Press about this breaking story. Much more to come...
