Pumpkin Contest success!

Indie, the winner of Ann Bancroft

Bread and Roses raised more than $600 for the North by Northeast Community Health Clinic when we held our Revolutionary Pumpkin Contest and Raffle this past Sunday! It was a load of fun -- and totally inspiring. It is not hard to do some grassroots organizing like Carole and Kris did, and have a lot of fun at the same time! Four Cinderella pumpkins were entered into the "judging" portion of the night. They won prizes as follows:

#1 - Phoolan Devi won first prize, for her ability to come back from a traumatic dog attack.

#2 - Punkin Tatunkin got second for showing that persistence, and plain old showing up can make one a winner. Punkin Tatunkin was about an inch in diameter. She only started growing with the help of Brooke's four-year-old nephew's fairy wand, two weeks before the raffle.

#3 - Ann Bancroft got third for her ability to thrive while on a wild adventure far from home. Ann proves that yes, size and beauty matter. She has both.

#4- Comandante Ramona the round-faced, smallish Cinderella pumpkin took fourth. It's not last exactly, because she did get props for flourishing, in a diminuitive sort of way, in spite of her lack of opportunity.

Many thanks to all the people and groups who donated money and goods for our fundraiser -- and all those who bought raffle tickets!
