Birthright: Another type of birthing controversy

You've heard us examine the issue of choice many times here on Bread and Roses, usually in the context of reproductive freedoms and the abortion issue. As feminists we believe it's every woman's choice to determine what happens with her body. And this goes not just for the choice to HAVE a child, but for the choice of HOW that child is born. Here in Oregon, we are blessed to have the option to birth at home, in a comfortable and safe setting that fosters family bonding.

On February 12 on Bread and Roses, we are excited to explore the issue of birth rights, the home birth issue, and efforts nationwide to see that families have a choice when it comes to how they bring children into this world. Later in the show we'll be joined by midwives from ALMA to talk about midwives' model of care and the challenges that model faces from the more mainstream hospital birth model.

We'll also be joined by the co-chair of South Dakota Safe Childbirth Options, a group advocating for the implementation of safe homebirth options for families in South Dakota -- where trained midwives can -- and HAVE -- served jail time for attending home births. We'll also talk with a woman who chose to have an un-assisted birth in South Dakota, when there was no other option for homebirth available to her. We'll also take time at the end of the show for people to call in with their questions regarding home birth and midwifery.

6:00 - 6:30 Esther Nelson from the Sexual Assault Resource Center will be interviewed by Ashley about her work with local girls who have been trafficked into underage prositution here in the local community. Listeners will learn what warning signs to look for in order to protect our girls and inform them about traffickers' tactics.

6:30 - 7:00 Host Nico will interview local physicians about the new mandates that have recently been released around mammogram testing. Listeners will be able to call in to ask the doctors questions, as well as voice any concerns that they might have.

Hear about the challenges that single parents face, but also the incredible ingenuity they can cull during tough economic times like this. A conversation with the creators of Single Parent magazine, Claire Bean and Morgan Siler about their new venture, and with Ellen Bravo, author of "Taking on the Big Boys" about the economic challenges of women and single mothers worldwide.

We will also talk with Molly Frye, the Homeless Liaison in the Reynolds School District, about the educational rights of children who are in transition in between housing. The McKinney Vento Act is a federal law about the public school rights of children who lose their permanent home, but unfortunately many people are not aware of this law.

Teachers Rebel!

On Friday, March 20, 6-7 pm, in a program dedicated to teachers everywhere, Bread and Roses explores the amazing but true story of a teacher's rebellion in Oaxaca, Mexico, that turned into a massive social justice movement.

Host Carole Scholl will present music and interviews from Oaxaca, including stories from the infamous "March of Pots and Pans," in which thousands of women marched to and took over a TV station. Renowned filmmaker Jill Freidberg will discuss her award-winning film about Oaxaca, A Little Bit of So Much Truth, and we'll hear about current radio activism in indigenous Oaxaca communities.

2.13.09 Show - Women in Oregon History

Harvey Scott was editor of the The Oregonian newspaper from 1866–1872. His sister Abigail Scott Duniway was a famous suffragist. She started the paper The New Northwest while supporting herself as a teacher. From 1884 to 1910, Oregon's male voters defeated suffrage five times at the polls. Abigail Duniway led the Oregon Equal Suffrage Association finally to victory at the polls in 1912. She became the first woman in her state to register to vote.Harvey Scott was an outspoken opponent of women’s right to vote. As a conservative, Scott used the Oregonian to oppose many of the social reforms of his time including free high schools and state supported schools of higher education. Portland - Rumors and whisperings are coming into the Disassociated Press about a group of rogue feminists, trying today to take down the statue of our beloved Harvey Scott, esteemed editor and molder of opinion in Oregon in the 19th and 20th century. The word is, these fanatical feminists wish to replace the statue with one of a Ms. Abigail Scott Duniway, sister of Mr. Scott, who was a pioneer for women's suffrage, in spite of her brother's efforts to the contrary. Several sleuthy photographers were able to document this feminist group, called Bread and Roses, pulling the statue down this afternoon with a less-than-hefty piece of rope. 1/23/09 Show: Edwidge Danticat & Michelle May

Edwidge Danticat is an award-winning Haitian American novelist. Her novels include Dew Breaker (2004), Behind the Mountains (2002), Farming of Bones (1998), Krik? Krak! (1995) and Breath, Eyes, Memory (1994). Her latest book Brother, I'm Dying tells the story of her uncle Joseph Danticat, who died in the custody of the Department of Homeland Security.

Michelle May is a world traveler off the main tourist path. Her latest trips took her to Kurdistan and Baluchistan in Iran. She spent her winter vacation shoveling mud in Gonaives, Haiti, a city still devastated by the hurricanes from September of 2008.

12/26/08 Show: Grassroots Fundraising

Join us on Bread and Roses Friday December 26, for a conversation with local activists about their grassroots fundraising efforts in our community. We will be joined by Althea Lazero from In Other Words feminist bookstore about efforts to save the store. In Other Words has come under strain in recent months because of the financial crisis, and they've put out a call to the community to help save the store. We'll also welcome Pastor Mary Overstreet Smith, to talk with her about her grassroots fundraising efforts in our community. Among her many accolades, Pastor Mary organized a group of people to help after Hurricane Katrina, and she is also a founder of North by Northeast Community Health Clinic -- bringing free health care to the Northeast Portland community.

We'll also be taking calls at the end of the show -- asking you to share your ideas about unique and effective methods of grassroots fundraising.

Tissa Hami is one of the world's few female Muslim stand-up comics. She grew up in a traditional Iranian family in a predominantly white suburb of Boston. She holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in international affairs. Tissa hopes her comedy will help break down stereotypes about Muslim women and foster understanding between Iranians and Americans. Negin Farsad grew up in Southern California. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Theater Arts and Government from Cornell University.
