Harvey Scott was editor of the The Oregonian newspaper from 1866–1872. His sister Abigail Scott Duniway was a famous suffragist. She started the paper The New Northwest while supporting herself as a teacher. From 1884 to 1910, Oregon's male voters defeated suffrage five times at the polls. Abigail Duniway led the Oregon Equal Suffrage Association finally to victory at the polls in 1912. She became the first woman in her state to register to vote.Harvey Scott was an outspoken opponent of women’s right to vote. As a conservative, Scott used the Oregonian to oppose many of the social reforms of his time including free high schools and state supported schools of higher education. Portland - Rumors and whisperings are coming into the Disassociated Press about a group of rogue feminists, trying today to take down the statue of our beloved Harvey Scott, esteemed editor and molder of opinion in Oregon in the 19th and 20th century. The word is, these fanatical feminists wish to replace the statue with one of a Ms. Abigail Scott Duniway, sister of Mr. Scott, who was a pioneer for women's suffrage, in spite of her brother's efforts to the contrary. Several sleuthy photographers were able to document this feminist group, called Bread and Roses, pulling the statue down this afternoon with a less-than-hefty piece of rope.
